Affiliate Marketing – A Guide for Complete Beginners Part 4

Hello and welcome to the last part of this 4 part series about affiliate marketing for beginners.

We started this journey of affiliate marketing with the simple objective of helping beginner marketers to understand how they can achieve real success by following some simple guidelines.

As a beginner marketer I truly hope this series has enabled you to have greater confidence in your ability to become profitable with affiliate marketing.

If I have achieved this for you then I am more than delighted and I look forward to hearing your success stories.

Join my blogging community here and stay in touch with me as you grow your online business. I’d love that.

If you prefer to listen then here’s my podcast version BUT please dont forget to leave me your comments below – that’s the “lifebood of my business” and your feedback is always appreciated so much.

If you missed parts 1, 2 or 3 of the series then as a beginner affiliate marketer I strongly suggest you go check them out first and then come back to this final stage of the series.

In part 1 we looked at a whole lot of critical things for affiliate marketing including “What Really Is Affiliate Marketing?” “How does affiliate marketing actually work?” and a whole lot more.

In part 2 we looked at “7 Key Reasons Why You Should Consider Affiliate Marketing”; “How Can I Make Money from Affiliate Marketing?” and “What Affiliate Programs Should I Select?”

In part 3 we looked at “How Best to Get Started as an Affiliate Marketer?” plus “Two Different Yet Successful Affiliate Marketing Strategies”

In this final part I’ll be giving you 11 Massive Tips for Success as an Affiliate Marketer

Let’s get started.

11 Massive Tips for Success as an Affiliate Marketer

My first bit of advice to you may seem a bit unusual but I strongly recommend as a beginner affiliate marketer you should never run after commissions.

Yes I know that’s why we are in business but firstly you need to make your name and credibility in the market and then the money will follow afterward.

affiliate marketing1. Choosing the Right Niche

As mentioned in part 3 of this series you must the time to research this step.

If you choose the wrong target market niche then you could see yourself spending a lot of time, effort and money on something that never makes you a cent.

When deciding on a niche ask yourself the following questions

  • Is there enough people looking for content related to this niche?
  • Is there a pain, frustration or problem I can solve for them?
  • When you search on Google are other businesses advertising on the results pages? If so there is definitely money to be made there.
  • Am I interested in this topic?
  • Is this topic too complicated for me?

2.  Only Choose a Few Good Products

Many beginner marketers make the mistake of registering with too many different affiliate programs and they try to promote everything and anything to anyone.

This is an absolute no no!

Do this and you will get completely overwhelmed, confused and this approach will send you broke. Plus I strongly recommend you purchase and use EVERY product you want to promote.

All you need in order to be successful is a handful of good products to promote.

Gentle Reminder: Just make sure you research the demand for the product first!

If you try to sell a product that is in low demand then chances are that you are not going to get many sales no matter how hard you try.

Get to know and understand your niche (target) market’s needs BEFORE you offer any products. Then make sure the products you select are completely relevant to the needs of your niche.

3. Stay with What You Know and Like

Just keep in mind that your affiliate marketing journey is not just an overnight thing.

For the foreseeable future your focus is going to be on building your affiliate marketing business.

So it may not be a very smart thing to start building a website that is based around topics that you really have no idea about – or worse have no real interest in!

This can be a recipe for disaster as an affiliate marketer.

To be a success in anything you’re going to need a positive mindset about what you’re doing every day.

If you get out of bed and don’t look forward to and enjoy what you do, I can almost guarantee you will not be doing it for long.

4. Be Honestaffiliate marketing

Sounds like common sense but it’s critical you do this every day. Always be honest and never make false claims

If there are some things that you don’t like about the affiliate product then tell your readers. This will absolutely differentiate you from the other marketers who are probably trying to sell them a product based on the features.

By sharing both the good and not so perfect things about your offer you are also showing that you have used the product as you know exactly what it does and what it doesn’t do.

This is a great way to easily build trust and rapport with your readers who will respect you for your honesty.

And it will encourage them to come back and visit your website again as well as promoting your reputation as someone who “tells you the truth”

5. Focus on Your Blog Content

With your blog always make sure you are writing about what people in your niche are interested in.

Always create content that is highly relevant to your niche.

This post is aimed right at you as a beginner marketer as that is precisely who my target audience is.

affiliate marketingNow if you are not a newbie online marketer then I still hope you got some affiliate marketing gems from my posts that you can pass on to others.

Good, informative and engaging pieces of writing will compel them to come to your blog regularly and the money will follow as you build your credibility and authority status.

When you create your posts think always about the pains and problems your target market has.

If you are simply writing posts for the sake of supporting your link like a salesman, you are less likely to succeed.

Make your reader believe through your writing (and/or your videos) that you really understand them and the challenges they are facing.

This way they are much more likely to join your blog community (your email list) that then gives you the best chance to build relationships and trust with them.

It’s also one of the very best ways to sell your affiliate product problem solvers!

6. Don’t Be Pushy

People hate being sold to but they love to buy.

So never insult your blog visitors by putting flashy banners like BUY IT NOW or anything like it.

Instead of trying to sell all the time show you are human. Show you care and are interested in them. Become involved and make your website visitor believe that you are there to help.

And of course always recommend the product by sharing your own experiences – this is just so powerful so don’t ignore this important step in your affiliate marketing.

7. Always Follow Upaffiliate marketing

Slow down cowboy. Your affiliate marketing success is not just about sales.

If a prospect buys your affiliate offer then always follow up and get the comments and reviews as how they found that product.

This is invaluable information that you can use in your marketing but sadly very few affiliate marketers bother to take this extra step.

I’ll let you into a secret – your brand new customers will love you for following up with them and that’s great for business as well. Agree?

Also make sure you are always there to assist them in case they find any inconvenience or problem using that product.

If you do these 2 simple things then you will never lose the trust of your audience and your reputation – your name will become so much more credible and highly regarded in your niche market.

8. Keep Your Focus

As a beginner affiliate marketer you will very quickly find yourself facing a lot of distractions in the form of flashy banners, easy ways to earn money online or something which attracts you and get you distracted from the affiliate marketing program which you are already working on.

Don’t chase those “shiny objects” – they will ruin your future. Please believe me on this as I’m a perfect example of an affiliate marketer who nearly went broke by continually buying “stuff” and losing focus.

This is how you lose your concentration and your chance of success if you are always in search of something better. Stop doing that right now and make the most of what you have.

When you start up as an affiliate marketer all you need to do is to be focused on building up your reputation and name. Once you are established, other avenues will open up automatically.

 affiliate marketing9. Cloaking Your Links

Almost all affiliate links are long and ugly.

If a reader sees these types of links then immediately they are thinking that you’re going to try and ell them something.

That may be true but by seeing your links and forming this impression you are not even going to get the chance to start making your offer –no matter how good it is.

Cloaking your links is the best way to keep the website looking professional while not coming off as a hard sell.

Don’t forget you can also use anchor text links in your emails that directly link to your offer page.

Now as a beginner if what you just read about “cloaking” and “anchor text links” makes absolutely no sense to you then don’t worry.

Just know there are free tools available that enable you to shorten your affiliate links and even make them look nothing like an affiliate link – if you’re using a wordpress blog then add the free plugin called “Pretty Links”

“Anchor text” is when emailing someone you to embed a link within a certain phrase in your email. It’s easy to do but if not sure just Google it and ask “How to use anchor text”.

10.Try Different Traffic Sources

If you are going to use paid traffic sources then be aware there are lots of alternatives. Learn from your mistakes because for sure you will have some traffic failures.

Just try to not keep repeating the same mistake over and over again like many new marketers do.

Watch your traffic and conversion stats like a hawk. (see point 11 below)

If the campaign cost is less than the campaign profit then you’re on a winner and you could scale it up.

But if that’s not the situation and you are losing money – stop, learn from this and change your traffic source.

Get Access to All The FREE Traffic You'll Ever Need For Your Marketing

11.Test, Measure and Track Everything

As I mentioned about “traffic sources” you need to be constantly checking all your stats.

The only way to know if your affiliate product promotion is working is to know your stats.

It’s also a good idea to use different product promotion strategies then you can figure out what is working and what is not.

Check everything. Even the position of your affiliate banners can increase your profit dramatically.

Most affiliate programs will give you all the basic stats that you need as a beginner.

My Almost Last Words On Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate marketing is a great method of marketing and promoting your products with ease and within the comfort of your home.

With the affiliate marketing business model you don’t require large amounts of investment to begin making good money online.

In fact, as you know by now, signing up with any affiliate program is completely free.

All you need is your time, effort and investment in setting up your blog and driving traffic.

However, as a beginner affiliate marketer, before you get started you should be aware there are some disadvantages that you should take into consideration:

  • In affiliate advertising there are some people involved in false claims advertising
  • Some merchants may be dishonest and promise higher rates and then reduce afterwards.
  • Some affiliates may engage in false advertisements to mislead the merchants and get commission.

However, affiliate marketing with all its advantages and disadvantages is still one of the best home based online businesses.

You are absolutely right about the “demonstration” strategy for affiliate marketing. It really does work.

However, to do this requires great confidence and experience neither of which beginner marketer have in abudance.

I am not saying beginners can’t use a demonstation approach to their selling but I just wonder how many would be confident and capable of doing so right at the start of their affiliate marketing journey.

Edwin many thanks for your valuable point of view – much appreciated

  3. Hii Peter

You have some really great points. The most important one is choosing a niche for our blog. This is where most people fail. I have seen many of my friends choosing a niche which hardly brings any income. Eventually, they loose interest and stop blogging forever.

Once you choose a perfect niche, you should show great patience and take one step at a time. It took me over a year to earn considerable income from my blog.

    Thanks

    • Hello Noor and welcome to my place,

What a great point you make regarding selecting the right niche for our blogs.

We also have to make sure we create content that is aimed right at the specific needs of our target audience. One “pain point per post” is a good guideline to use.

And I totally agree with you about the importance of having a mindset of patience.

Nothing happens overnight or even over a month and we just have to keep building our valuable content to attract and keep our target audience readers. Then you are in a postion to stat to monetize your blog readers.

Thank you again for your valuable feedback Noor – greatly appreciated.

  4. What a helpful post you have here, Peter

I could write a blog post to comment on each of your points. But I shall resist the temptation and focus on 3 of your points

    1. Don’t Be Pushy.
First thing is for people to ensure their site is non-threatening – a haven for people to visit. So if their blog screams sales and hype, visitors will run a mile. You mentioned banners. If someone is starting out, I reckon they should avoid ’em like the plague.

    2. Always Follow Up.
What’s the old saying? Follow up = Fortune. It starts with email follow up. But other follow-up methods can be employed such as sending them a Twitter or Facebook personal message. For big ticket sellers, follow up can/should also include a phone call or two.

    3. Keep Your Focus.
This is a big one! I reckon more budding marketers fail because they choke then panic. Others have the attention span of a gnat and run out of patience. That’s when they start looking at other things. When it happens, they may as well cut their losses and quit, because they probably won’t make money from the new thing either.

People need to hold their nerve during the difficult early stages, and just hang in there regardless.

    I love this post, Peter.

I can’t wait to share it

    Kim

    • Hi Kim and as always its a pleasure to have you visit my place,

Actually you picked what to me are the 3 key elements of this post.

Without repeating your superb comment details let me just say that my experience so far has seen so many affiliate marketers ( and bloggers) fail simply because they gave up too quickly.

They didn’t just lose focus but failed the essential test of being both persistent and consistent in their actions.

For all beginners the message I want to share is one of just doing the required “income producing activities” each and every day.

Have belief in yourself and let the actions you take start to build momentum for you – be patient as you so rightly said Kim.

The worst thing an affiliate marketer could do is to “put all their marketing eggs in one basket” like a solo add and send that traffic of to some vendor’s sales page. I only mention this because just today 3 new affiliate marketers contacted me asking for help as their marketing budgets had all been used up – and none of them even tried to build an email list.

I recommended that they check out these 4 Affiliate Marketing posts.

Thanks asa always for your awesome content Kim,

  6. Hi Peter,

It’s been awesome discovering your blog…I landed here after one of your followers shared the link to this entry on FB (Donna, I think it is).

Affiliate marketing represents the second most viable method of making money with a blog (the first being selling products directly). Unfortunately, like you rightly observed in part 1, a huge percentage of bloggers who attempt this model always get it wrong…this is sad!

Personally, I sincerely love making money as an affiliate. Although, I have discovered that organic traffic accounts for more than 95% of my conversions…as a SEO expert, I guess, I’ll simply focus on that so that I can maximize it’s full potential.

Your entry has been most insightful and sincerely helpful…you write in such a brilliant and easy to understand manner.

    Do make the day great.

  7. This 4 part series was just wonderful Peter!

You gave such great advice for affiliate marketers. I’ve done some affiliate marketing and whenever I do, that #4 is the BEST advice: Be Honest! People have a funny way of knowing when you are and when you are not.

If I’m affiliating something, I have to be using it myself. Then if I want to blog about it I will do a “review” and if someone wants to opt in, a good rule of thumb is to make a short video introducing the person that you are affiliating. I know it is an extra step but it does build more trust.

Just one minute saying “Thanks for opting in, I want to introduce Mr. X who has helped me, I hope you find this of value”

Also I like the advice you have given by not affiliating too many things. People will label you as an “Affiliate hack” And that will come quickly. I have seen some of the best fall into failure that way.

    Thanks for this series!

    -Donna

    • Hi Donna and as always its great to have you visit with me,

Wow what a truly fantastic tip – I’ve never considered the idea of creating a brief video of introduction.

Sure it’s an extra step but hey what a great way to differentiate your offer.
I absolutely loved that idea and will definitely be implementing it in my affiliate marketing.

It doesn’t take very long to see that honesty is sometimes “side-lined” when it comes to affiliate marketing.

I agree with you that people will pick that up, especially if you’re an experienced online marketer.

But my concern re this is that a beginner marketer, so full of fire and enthusiam, may very well miss the signals and be duped by some “not so honest” marketers.

Thanks so much for your very kind and supportive comment Donna – that means a lot to me especially knowing just how successful you are as an online marketer.

  8. Hi Peter,

Stick with what you know and like.

That advice alone is gold. As is the whole post!

I only do what I have fun doing. And nothing else. I like working my niche so it’s play. Blogging. Traveling. Blogging from paradise. Magic. Because I’m playing all day long and folks who dig my play connect with me. All the tension and struggles arise if you deviate from what you like and know, just to make a buck. SO many folks do this which is why SO many folks struggle to build a successful affiliate campaign.

When you have fun, the fun is the reward. So you detach more from outcomes. And in this space, the magic happens.

Thanks for the inspired share Peter!

  9. Hi Peter,

Extremely comprehensive series on affiliate marketing – any beginner (and not-so-beginner) will take away tons of value from your 4-part series.

I arrived fairly late at affiliate marketing. I was first encouraged by a coach to create my own digital product. This might sound wonderful, but I had nowhere near enough skills and experience to do that.

Finally having stumbled through all the steps I was discouraged to sell hardly any. No surprise really because – being honest – there were far better products out there, written by people with more experience and more resource that I had. In all honesty, how could I promote my product – knowing there were better products out there?

So I turned to a different approach.

I’m a part-time blogger creating a business to support me in retirement and my time is short, so I have taken the step of promoting a ready-made business that fits round my existing commitments. I have also chosen some superb training I’m using to learn how to promote that part-time business. These training products are the same ones that Peter is using, so I know he’s recommending top quality training to you.

Many thanks for your kind words of support – actually this series was really more like a labour of love.

To tell you the truth I still feel the pain and misery of my early failurs.

When I sat down and looked at all the mistakes I had made and the affiliate marketing opportunities that I simply wasted because of my ignorance, it made me even more determined to put this series together. Not just for beginners but for me as well.

Creating this series has helped me to “clear the decks” so to speak and to ensure my future affiliate marketing never again makes those mistakes.

I feel for you Joy when you spoke about your own product creation efforts. I did exactly the same thing and it was a very costly experience for me.

  10. Peter – I’m in awe. I’ve just read all 4 parts of your affiliate marketing guide and the quality and depth of the content, the clean and simple way you describe the steps to take, the options and the potential pitfalls are just so impressive. I’ve just created my first rather pathetic little 500 word blog post and I’m so grateful to have the opportunity to view the output of a master!

This is not so much a series of blog posts as a comprehensive affiliate marketing master class vastly superior to many commercially sold products. Thank you so much and I encourage everybody to read Peter Beckenham’s Affiliate Marketing Guide.

With every good wish for your success.

    • Hello Patrick and wow….what can I say but thank you.

I am absolutely delighted you not just followed all 4 parts of this series but as well get some real value from it.

That is what makes my day – to have my readers enjoying and learning from my posts. That is very special to me.

By the way don’t be too hard on yourself re your first blog post Patrick – I enjoyed it.

And heck its far better than not having started at all like many “wanna be bloggers” I see every single day.

Its very nice of you to give me such an honorable title as “affiiate marketing master” Patrick.

But please know that although I have had some real success with this business model I still consider myself as relatively new to the game compared to some affiliate marketers who have many years of experience.

But hey I’ll take the compliment with gratitude and thanks.

I hope you shared the post for me so as many beginner marketers as possible can follow in your footsteps and go throught the 4 part series.

Your idea of creating small niche specific affiliate websites is an interesting strategy Tim. Actually most of the sites I see are more “product specific” rather than “niche specific” and unless you have a big reputation or lots of traffic potential, I would not recommend this approach for a beginner marketer.

However, the concept of “niche specific” is a great idea if you have done the research first and uncovered what I would call a “viable niche” – one that has real need with an audience prepared to pay to solve those very needs.

Then you could simply generate highly relevant content that addresses, one at a time, the “pain points” of that specific target audience. The solutions to these pain points or challenges they are facing can then be your highly relevant affiiate offers.

Hope that helps your thinking Tim.

      Best wishes form Thailand
